THE HIGH TEMPERATURES OF THE SUMMER PROPRIED SOME LOWER LEVELS IN THE NUMBER OF FLIES
This summer we have had particularly high temperatures in our area and very often, as in most of Spain. These high temperatures have been taking place since the middle of June, July and first half of August; having already had some days of high temperatures in the month of May. So much so that this July the highest average temperature has been recorded since data is available. It has been possible to feel that for several consecutive days they exceeded 40º.
This situation has caused many olive groves to dry up earlier than usual., but it also has positive aspects. The main benefit that can be seen is that the levels of Olive Fly this year are being much lower compared to others. There are areas where the traps have been fly free for a good part of the summer. This plague, the main one for the olive tree in general and especially complicated in our area, it is not capable of withstanding temperatures above 35º-37º for several days in a row, decreasing its activity and stopping chopping the olives.
It is for this reason that the first air treatment has been delayed until the last week of August.. This decision is made once it has been seen that the levels of this pest in the field begin to rise and that the temperatures we are having in recent days are being mild
