The Spanish cereal sector foresees a lower harvest for herbaceous crops than in recent years. Losses are accused due to different circumstances, as damages derived from wildlife, from the frosts registered in some areas and mainly from the lack of rainfall, despite the fact that last April it was more humid and cooler than usual in much of the peninsular territory, especially in the east.
With planting areas similar to previous years (5,7 million hectares) except durum wheat and sunflowers, yields will be lower, taking into account the losses caused by high temperatures in February and repeated lack of water throughout the winter, which they have caused the vegetative development of plants.
In some areas of the provinces of Huelva, Cádiz, Córdoba, Sevilla, Cuenca and Ciudad Real are already irreparable losses recorded between 10 and the 20 percent in winter cereals.
In those same areas will be very affected the production of these crops straw, because it is clear the lack of size of the plants affected.
