THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC MATTER IN THE SOIL FOR OUR CROPS

Nov 7, 2022 | FARMING, COMPOST | 0 comments

Agricultural soils are increasingly with less content in Organic Matter, which causes a worse structure in the soil. The retention capacity of nutrients, of water and the aeration necessary for our crops depend on the content of M.O. present on the ground, therefore, correcting its levels as well as maintaining it is vital to conserve and increase the productive levels of our farms.

The fertility of a soil is responsible for the production capacity of our crops, therefore we need to maintain or increase (according to the case) some minimum values that guarantee it. We must understand that fertility does not only refer to the amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorus or Potassium that our soils have, but the ability it has to retain nutrients avoiding their leaching (cation exchange capacity), the capacity of water retention and the improvement of the structure facilitating the aeration of the roots.

To achieve the above goals, On the one hand, we must have adequate organic matter content in the soil and that can be known by carrying out a soil analysis and checking how our soil is and from there, correct to reach certain levels of 1.8 % by M.O. on dry land and 2.2% in irrigation. And on the other is the Carbon/Nitrogen ratio, data that we can also know through soil analysis and that gives us a very important value. Optimum C/N values would be between 10-12, values above indicate a bad decomposition of the soil, which translates into a slow decomposition of organic matter, being its reasons the lack of aeration or an excess of water, due to different causes such as a clayey texture, poor soil structure by impermeable layer, etc. Values below 10 indicates a degraded soil with low potential for our crops as it causes poor soil structure and fertility.

From the SCA Los Remedios Picasat, we use three by-products from our own agricultural and livestock facilities, such as bovine manure, olive leaves and alperujo. The proper mix causes a process known as composting, which is to raise the temperature of the material, which is arranged in piles of 3 meters wide by 1,5 meters high, With this we manage to decompose the mixed materials as well as the elimination of seeds and possible pathogens that are found in it.. The successive flips that we give, we get a product with a suitable granulometry for its use in our agricultural soils, a homogeneous uniformity of the product and adequate fertility for our crops.

Currently there is availability for all those farmers interested in using compost as fertilizer for their crops, You can consult us through the Technical Services of the Cooperative or by calling 956131347.
