IT IS IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY WHAT PARASITES ARE ON THE FARM AND WHAT PROBLEMS MAY CAUSE
With the variety of possible parasites of our animals, It is clear that we have to make sure which ones are present in our farm and what problems may be causing. Veterinarians are the most appropriate to ensure an accurate diagnosis and to put control measures. A stool diagnosis costs very little and gives us valuable information on whether or not we should deworm.
An increasingly frequent problem is resistance to antiparasitics. We have abused them so much in the last 30 years that in many countries hardly have any effect.
Another negative impact of antiparasitics, especially ivermectins, is its effect on the environment. They are very harmful when after giving them to animals, through stool, they get to the middle and keep killing, for example, dung beetles, essential to help the natural processes of the earth linked to the balance necessary for the production of grass.
The first measure is the broom and water. Cleaning and disinfection of pens are the best possible antiparasitic.
Clean beds and a correct density of animals are essential. Equally, the control of dogs and cats of the farm as well as other inhabitants: rats etc.
A prudent use of antiparasitics is recommended, especially at the beginning of Autumn and in Spring, to prevent animals from infesting larval grass. Also a rotational grazing of the plots, putting two species to graze.
Before parturition there are elevations in the number of eggs of intestinal parasites, so an ideal time to deworm animals is 30 days before they give birth.
Regarding treatments, you have to know that you will always have to meet the waiting period to go to the slaughterhouse.
Especially problematic is the deworming of goats, as there are very few registered products for goats. There is only one authorized product in dairy goats with zero days of withdrawal period. It's the Eprinex Multi. further, there are two other products registered in goats, but with a few days of withdrawal period in milk:
– Panacur 100. Have 8 days in milk and 16 days in meat.
– Albecorin. Have 4 days in milk and 10 days in meat.
ONLY these products can be used in goats. All others on the market are prohibited, since there are registered products and therefore they are the only ones that can be used. From there we must choose which product is used depending on whether the goats are giving milk or not.
