The carob, "A real alternative for the Sierra de Cádiz"

Last Thursday 4 April 2025, The SCA Los Remedios Picasat was present in the XII Technical Day on the "Promotion and improvement in the cultivation of the carob", Organized by the Association Innovative Companies of La Garrofa (EIG), held at the facilities that Cajamar has at the experimental station "Las Palmerillas", In the Almeria municipality of El Ejido.

In the course of this we were able to verify the boom that is taking the cultivation of carob, Not only for the quality of the presentations and the speakers but for the number of people who participated in the event, more of 150.

Diverse were the aspects that were treated as they were:

  • Varietal evolution and technological improvement.
  • Main results of the “kerat” operational group.
  • Liver management of carob seedlings.
  • Agronomic characteristics of the varieties of Algarrobo cultivities on the island of Mallorca.
  • Environmental benefits of carob, Regarding the kidnapping of co2.
  • Healthy aspects of Algarroba's employment in human food.

The SCA Los Remedios has been, forming part of work meetings, both with the EIG and in the kerat operational group, Highlighting the most important aspects to work on so that the carob cultivation is profitable for the farmer, Due to its magnificent beneficial qualities not only as healthy food but also from an environmental point of view.

Today, Thanks to these work meetings, We have been able to advance in aspects as important as:

  1. Development of the nursery plant with known patterns and varieties, With minimal guarantees.

In collaboration with recognized nurseries prestige, We today have a perfect plant to design a commercial plantation, agronomically viable and with the production of a garrofa with a seed performance and organoleptic qualities demanded by the industrial sector.

2. Knowledge of varieties and patterns.

We currently design the plantations by having female plants and their hermaphrodite pollinators strategically arranged to guarantee proper pollination.

As female varieties we use: SDC, Duraio and Sayalonga.

As hermaphrodite varieties we use: Bouquet, Valdellos, 13P and 14p.

Regarding patterns, We were clear that we needed a robust root, with the ability to adapt to limestone, with vigor and few water needs. Therefore all the material used today, proceed from seed of the red variety.

We are currently working to obtain a plant material that is native to the Sierra de Cádiz.

The distribution of the carob is focused throughout the Mediterranean arch and specifically in Spain is located throughout the Mediterranean coast, From Portugal to Tarragona.

Regarding the use and employment of the garrofa, It does not focus only on garrofín extract as a natural thickener from the seed, but also of the various applications that garrofa flour has as a healthy ingredient used in the restoration.

Many are the benefits of the carob, as food rich in iron, In magnesium, In protein, low in sodium, rich in sugars, as an antioxidant, rich in pinitol, sin gluten, etc.

So, We are facing a crop that:

  1. For its geographical distribution, Specifically the province of Cádiz, We are in your natural habitat.
  2. For its adaptation to desert climates, With high efficiency in water use, It can be part of agricultural diversification in mountain areas or with limitations in water use.
  3. Agronomically it is a crop that is not very demanding for management.
  4. Commercially the fields of application are more and more, so, Offer industrial a quality product is primary.

VISITS, TASTING AND COURSES

  • They organize guided tastings by technicians from the Cooperative and by technicians from the Olvera Denomination of Origin. They take place in our facilities of the Cooperative. They are aimed at schools, to consumer groups, hospitality schools, etc.
