THE INSTITUTIONS ARE CALLED FOR MORE INVOLVEMENT IN THE CONSERVATION OF THIS ECOSYSTEM
Owners of dehesas, Ranchers and various groups have come together to create the ‘SOS to save the pasture’ platform to demand that the administrations get involved in the conservation of this ecosystem, and face, principally, to the problem of the dry.
The decision was adopted at a meeting held at the ‘Dehesa San Francisco’ farm that the Monte Mediterráneo Foundation has in the Huelva municipality of Santa Olalla del Cala (Huelva), as reported by Ecovalia, one of the associations involved.
They warn that year after year the pastures lose, due to the dry, thousands of holm oaks and cork oaks, which "endangers a unique system in Europe and fundamental in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula".
Thus, as stated in the ‘Report of the Study Paper on the protection of the dehesa ecosystem’, drawn up by the Senate, in the last 25 years has dried more than 5.000.000 trees (between holm oaks and cork oaks) in the southwest of the Spanish peninsula.
Faced with this reality and to involve the administrations, they have decided to promote the ‘SOS dehesa-STOP desert’ Manifesto through social networks, seeking support in the struggle they have decided to undertake..
