AN EMPHASIS HAS BEEN MADE IN THE TYPE OF FEED AND IN ITS MANAGEMENT
Throughout the month of August there have been a series of talks, by our veterinarian Salvador Sánchez Vargas, on Goat and Sheep Cattle Problems Linked to Feeding, from the birth of goats and lambs, weaning and rearing.
In order to facilitate the assistance of farmers, an important effort was made, repeating the meeting in 8 points of our cooperative geography: Alora and Antequera in the province of Malaga; Osuna and Los Corrales in Seville, and finally, The forest, Olvera, Jerez and Alcála de los Gazules in the province of Cádiz. In total some 250 ranchers have attended any of the 8 organized days.
In them, special emphasis has been placed on the type of feed to be used and above all on their handling. Likewise, coccidiosis was talked about as a very important disease, especially in goats and lambs among the 15 days of life until 4 months. Previously controlled with medications in feed, but due to legislative changes we have had to modify the disease control strategy, and farmers have to have the new tools to handle this problem.
The different parts of the goat's lactation period and their main associated problems have also been reviewed.: diarrhea, quality forage problem, etc. further, in the late lactation phase there may be difficulties with fattening goats, what gave rise to talk about Gestational Toxemia, which is a very serious problem suffered by goats and sheep in recent years 15 days before delivery. It is necessary for farmers to know why this disease occurs in order to remedy it before it occurs, because with proper feeding management the problem is greatly minimized.
