LOW RAINFALL AND HIGH TEMPERATURES, TWO OF THE KEYS
Cereal production in the European Union (EU) will drop a 2,4 % in 2017, compared to last year, while in Spain a 34 %, according to the data released today by the Committee of Agrarian Organizations and Community Cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca).
The grain harvest in the 28 member countries will be located in 297,8 millions of tons, while in Spain it will amount to 15,2 millions.
In our country, common wheat production will decrease by 48,9 %, until 3,69 millions of tons; the durum wheat will fall a 5 %, until 1,1 millions of tons; the barley will drop a 39 %, until 5,7 million tons and corn a 10 %, until 3,2 millions of tons.
The climatic evolution during the campaign has been characterized by accumulated rainfall below the average in the main producing regions, in conjunction with above-average temperatures. This means that the average yield per hectare could be reduced between 40 and the 50% compared to the previous campaign
